Islamabad: An important meeting is starting in Islamabad on Saturday as part of efforts to convert the ongoing tension between America and Iran into permanent peace. The talks are being mediated by Pakistan and are believed to be focused on strengthening the recently announced two-week ceasefire.
After many years, this is considered to be the highest-level direct or mediated discussion between the two countries. In the current situation, this is not just an attempt to maintain the ceasefire but also an initiative to decide the direction of a permanent solution.
According to sources, the main talks are likely to be held at Serena Hotel Islamabad in Islamabad. The hotel has been fully booked for several days and all other guests have been turned away for security reasons. Some reports also say that the talks may shift to the Prime Minister's residence.
An area of about three kilometers has been sealed in the Red Zone of the capital. Security agencies are on high alert to avoid any kind of mistake.
From the Iranian side, there is information about the participation of Parliament Speaker and senior military leader Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, National Security Council officials, Deputy Foreign Minister and the ambassador posted in Islamabad.
From the US side, Vice President JD Vance, President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner can participate in the talks.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will formally launch this dialogue. After this he will hold separate preliminary meetings with both sides. Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will play an important role in coordinating behind the scenes so that face-to-face talks are possible.
There is no official confirmation yet on whether Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir will be a part of this meeting or not.
This dialogue is not limited to just stopping the current conflict. It is expected that if the talks remain positive, the direction for a comprehensive and permanent agreement may be cleared in the coming days.
